“Although I appreciate many styles, from gaudy Victorian headboards to flamboyant Psychedelic Art, to the bones of my 1951 house, less still proves to be more. A paired down, clean modern setting proves to be most livable and inspiring for me.
My love of mid century modern is very diverse. Sometimes it’s the linear clean lines, or it’s an organic form that grabs my attention. I like the raw feeling of natural wood tables. Like those produced by, George Nakashima, with his wonderful burl pieces. Open floor plans, and a Japanese sensibility appeal to me.
I’m really just a big fan of function. So give me a long, low credenza and I’m in Heaven! Besides, my cats look fabulous on Mid-Century Modern! That’s just pure aesthetics, not vanity!”

“I first became interested in modern design a few years back. Growing up in the 70’s my parents always had lots of teak furniture and I guess that sort of stuck. Now that I am older and can appreciate it for what it was, it has become sort of an obsession of mine. My main focus these days seems to be of an architectural theme and I thoroughly enjoy the works of Mies van der Rohe, Frank Gehry and the like.”

I’ve been becoming increasingly interested in mid-century modern design with the relative nature of my job. Working for Fossil, I’ve had the opportunity to work on brands like Philippe Starck and Armani developing watches that often take inspiration from mid-century modern design.
If you haven’t read a copy of Modernism magazine yet, get yourself over to their site to have a look at their online issue. It’s one of our favourite magazines, and it just keeps getting better and better!
Finnish-born Eero Saarinen really shaped the future of design with his gravity-defying, space-age, sinewy forms in both industrial design and architecture. His untimely death cut short a fabulous career, and deprived us of more of his groundbreaking design. Read his biography here.

Congratulations to Erika Oman for winning Lushpad’s January Give-Away of a jetset hanging mobile by Atomic Mobiles. Erika has a long history in design and furniture having worked for a specialty auction house for a number of years. She’s now hosting Designer People, a new show on Ovation TV. The show sounds really exciting and we’ll keep you up to date on its progress.

We’re in the process of upgrading lushpad.com to make it even better thanks to those of you who took our survey last week. One of the big issues was the lack of information on how to ship items once they were sold, so we’ve tried to rectify this by adding a “How-to” article. We’re also planning to include a shipping widget into our system so buyers and sellers can seamlessly contact freight agents to get the best price and service available.
