Inspired by the 1950s designs of British textile designer, Lucienne Day, the distinctive graphic lines of this pattern are bold, happy and retro yet still incredibly modern. Lucienne and Robin Day are considered the British equivalent of Ray and Charles Eames. A fantastic indepth biography of the husband and wife team can be seen on the Design Museum web site.

If you get the chance you must check out the Ought Apartment installation in the Vancouver Art Gallery. Vancouver artist Reece Terris has built a 60-foot architectural installation in the heart of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Focusing on the evolution of domestic space in Vancouver over the last six decades, Ought Apartment is an “apartment tower” with six full-sized residences stacked on top of each other, each dedicated to a decade of décor between 1950 and 2000.

Every piece of cabinetry, tile work, bathroom fixtures, linoleum floors, wallpaper, appliances, lamps, furniture and a myriad of other domestic artifacts were carefully removed from residences slated for demolition or renovation for reconfiguration in Terris’s sculpture. The artist salvages these rapidly vanishing domestic objects to emphasize their cultural value, as well as the ongoing cycles of human consumption.

The work will be on display until September 20, 2009, so you still have a chance to drool over this amazing piece of work.

This gorgeous home is The Scheidt weekend residence. Designed by architects Robert Luntz and Joe Tanney of Resolution 4 Architecture, this 2,400 square foot home was tastefully decorated by Amy Lau.

Lau’s great knowledge of 20th century decorative arts led her to use many beautiful mid-century modern furniture pieces to create a space that is modern and warm. Pieces such as Edward Wormley’s sectional sofa for Dunbar, and a Greta Jalk lounge chair and ottoman and a Jens Risom table create a restrained yet modern feel.

This fantastic mid-century modern office looks like it’s straight off the set of AMC’s Mad Men or a James Bond film, but it’s actually the original office of Harley Earl, Vice President of Design at General Motors from 1927 to 1959. We’ve been fans of Timorous Beasties for a number of years now and love their unique hand-printed designs – some with a slightly gothic feel. They’re well-known for their Euro Damask – Their interpretation of Damask using European coastlines and cartographical contours.

“These new patterns are very textural. Euro Damask is made up of actual European coastlines; Butterfly is an extension of Euro Damask: we took the outline of a butterfly and exaggerated the contours, using coastlines as influences to get the fractured edge. Within that we printed a finely drawn detail of the wing patterns.”
